Citrus Southern Africa: Easy Peeler Newsflash June 10, 2002

SA Clementines

Ø      Fewer, Fresher, Faster and Firmer going Further

The enhanced focus on the quality of fruit and logistics service from packer to port, and reefer to retailer is drawing the lighter Southern African Easy Peeler crop through the market at a healthy rate. Significantly less stock is in the system as illustrated by the graph below. The 2001 season’s stock levels in Southern African ports as a percentage of shipped volumes were significantly higher than the 2002 season. The rapid turnaround of fruit ensures that fresh and firm SA Clementines reach markets significantly earlier than before.

The crop, much lighter than 2001 due to earlier blossom was further reduced by culling for quality.

The significantly higher proportion of South African easy peelers finding their way to the United States of America, will also reduce the volume available to the traditional European Union markets
